Sharing Your Art is F*cking Scary

Art. It’s something we create to express ourselves, communicate ideas, explore, make something visually pleasing, or even have fun. Of course, at some points, we want to share this art. Maybe we want to show it to friends or family, post it on our Instagram, or even submit it to get published. But this is where things start to get stressful. What if they don’t like it? What if they don’t get it? What if they think it’s stupid? — and the thoughts go on. The bottom line is sharing your art is f*cking scary.

Sharing artwork is an odd process. You want to show your art to the world, but at the same time, you are absolutely terrified to do so. Some of us don't really think we "deserve" the title artist, painter, author, or whatever, which makes this fear even worse. I am primarily a writer, but I also dabble in painting and drawing, and I have always been nervous to share my art. Oftentimes some people say it’s like bearing your soul for all to see; it’s a glimpse into your mind and how you think. This makes our artwork really personal, so if someone doesn’t like it, we might take this blow a little harder because it’s tied to such personal aspects of ourselves. Overall, it makes it hard to put ourselves and our work out there.

But here’s the thing: if your art makes you happy, content, or however you want to feel after making it, then it’s a success. Art isn’t always for other people, even if we do want to share it. Also, you might be surprised at how many people might relate to your work; you never know who you can connect with through your art until you try. Yes, sharing is absolutely terrifying, but don’t take comments too personally, and take pride in your work. And, keep in mind, everyone is scared to show their artwork to the world—no matter how talented you think they are.
